The Spirit has given us the word through pens of men like Peter. We can gain much when we understand the biographical context of his letters. That is, we must meditate on what Scripture tells us of Peter and the changes he underwent. We must look to Scripture to find the changes his teaching made in people’s lives by the power of the Spirit. We must read and re-read his message and be engaged with the context. We must let the Bible speak and not force interpretations that aren’t there. We must follow his God-given instructions and heed his God-given warnings. We must make sure change is taking place in our own lives.
This study is not a “verse-by-verse” study. It is designed to help us discover the message of Peter by laying his letters “side-by-side” along with his sermons, his life, and his time with the Master. In preparing for this study read about Peter in the book of Acts; read about Peter in the gospels. Examine Peter’s sermons, especially scrutinize his words recorded in the second and third chapters of Acts. Read Peter’s first letter through in one sitting—then do it some more. Read Peter’s second letter through in one sitting—then do it some more. Read both of Peter’s letters together in one sitting—and continue to do so throughout the study. Let Peter’s letters become a part of your thinking. Our attitude should be like the attitude found in the writing of Jeremiah: “Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.” (Jeremiah 15:16). This brings true change. This brings true growth. Can you see it in you?
