The message of the inspired books penned by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is a message of the good news of Jesus. These inspired men “reported” on the life and sacrifice of Jesus. Many of the events, quotations, and settings are common to the books, especially those of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Jesus’ story was recorded by each man in his own particular circumstance. The first readers of the message also read in this way. Naturally, the facts remain the same, but the context is slightly different. For instance, Luke tended to write from a very “historical” perspective—”Greek,” if you will. Matthew tended to write from a very “Jewish” perspective emphasizing the kingship and the teachings of Jesus. Mark tended to write in a way that would make people who were gentiles take notice by emphasizing the miracles and authority of Jesus—a very Roman concept—even though He came to serve.
Read and meditate on Matthew’s gospel before you begin this study. Sometimes, other gospels will be referenced, but try to “discover” the themes that Matthew presents by spending time within his account. Make notes, make outlines, use the steps of this study to help focus on God’s word. In His word you will see the King and hear His words!
