Discovering Leviticus:

Seeing the Holy Relationship

Leviticus is remembered by many people as the place where they abandon their yearly Bible-reading program. It is imagined as being daunting and perplexing. Then, some think that there is no application for them—after all, I’m not a Levite and I don’t live under a law given for Israel. The reality is that Leviticus is extremely important to understanding God and our relationship with Him.

The tendency is for people to think of the “old” law as a collection of tedious rules that have little to do with faith. Leviticus dispels that notion. There are “rules” that were to be followed, but it is clear that all of this is founded in the idea of the whole heart being involved—pleasing God is not some mere ritual.

The “rules” in the book of Leviticus serve another purpose as well. They point the way to the entirety of God’s plan summed up in Messiah, the anointed. The various sacrifices and offerings relate directly to Him. The feast days relate directly to Him. Redemption and the forgiveness of sin relate directly to Him.

Everything contained within the book of Leviticus is about the proper relationship with God and His plan for enabling us to be with Him as He is. Do you want to be pleasing to God? Learn about holiness, what it means, and how to put it into practice. Remember God’s requirement: “Be holy, for I am holy.”
