Creation is often the point of focus when thinking of “beginnings” in the book of Genesis. Indeed, creation is the beginning of this book of beginnings. The theme of “beginning” that runs throughout the book reaches far beyond the physical creation. We must never overlook the fact that within Genesis, God is presented as the source of all things, both physical and spiritual.
The study outlined in this book is not based upon a verse-by-verse approach. It is arranged upon a contextual or thematic foundation. If we can see the “circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea,” then surely it will enable us to grasp the meaning of the text. Likewise, when we follow the theme, knowing what comes before and after, the text becomes clear. Essentially, this study helps us build a contextual framework on which to “hang” our continual study of God’s word.
Seeing the theme of Genesis, we begin to observe the wonder and majesty of God’s power in all things. God not only provided the physical, but began to unfold for mankind His plan for the ages—His plan for providing man a way of redemption.
